In the Begining...

by Stefan Bagg

It was a late hazey December afternoon 14 years ago when Troy Muir first saw "Bentfin". He couldn't believe his eyes, there right before him, rising out of the slick, glassy surface of Port Phillip Bay like a crooked periscope was a dorsal fin. Sure he'd seen dorsal fins many times before, especially while working the dive charter seasons with his father Tony around the islands of Wilsons Prom, but never had he seen one like this nor what it was doing.

First of all it was bent on a 45 degree angle to one side about half way up from its base to its tip. Secondly it had risen in liquid, slow motion right beside his mother Judy who was robotically churning out strokes while training for a series of upcoming open water endurance events. Tony and Troy were pacing her on "Polperro", acting as lookouts and as a safety vesssel to protect her from the late return of mindless jetskiiers and speed boats. As they made their way past Point King heading out of the Sorrento channel, with the sun setting over the Heads, the glare along Shelly Beach made it difficult for him to ascertain the truth of the vision before him. Sure enough, as he looked on there was his mother being circled by this magnificently graceful creature as she in turn rolled and circled in symbiotic recognition of "Bentfin's" genuine interest.

Since then dolphin encounters have become more or less a regular occurance for the Muirs and "Polperro", who have inadvertantly become the central pivotal focus of a growing commercial industry. While the events of that day may have lasted only a few moments in time, the ramifications have rippled on into permanance. However at the heart of their continuing role in this affair it has always been the Muirs' deep desire to maintain and protect this once innocent encounter and make it available in its purest form to others for future generations to come. To preserve the sanctity of this uniquely inspirational moment has become Judy's life mission, along with Troy's original vision, and remains "Polperro's" guiding light.
